Shepherds Lodge Cottage - Arkengarthdale, Upper Swaledale

self catering the dales, holiday accommodation the dales

Full Description
This delightful, stone-built semi-detached farmhouse is located on a working hill sheep farm, attached to the owner's family farmhouse in Arkengarthdale, just five miles from Reeth, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Set in a splendid secluded location, this first-class cottage has lovely views across open pastureland, a babbling brook and the magnificent Arkengarthdale countryside within easy reach. It is an ideal retreat for those looking to get away from it all, re-charge the batteries and enjoy true country living, while exploring the wild and rugged surroundings.
Modern and stylish throughout, this lovingly-restored cottage boasts underfloor heating provided from a biomass heating system and a wonderful blend of furnishings, which enhance the original features of this old farmhouse. The ground floor sitting room has three-piece recliners and a feature fireplace containing a multi-fuel stove, making it a great place to curl up with a good book. The adjoining kitchen is open plan, with arched doorways leading to the utility room and a dining area, set by the main window to take full advantage of the long distance views.

The room is large and social, a great place to prepare a meal and relax after a day's outing on the local fells. Upstairs, the master bedroom boasts a super king-size sleigh bed, a feature fireplace, lots of storage space and the added benefit of a view across the attached farmyard. The second bedroom has twin beds, which can be made into a super king-size double on request, while the main bathroom features a lovely freestanding bath and Velux windows, letting lots of light into the room. Outside, the south-facing patio enjoys magnificent views across the adjoining meadows; after a day out and about, you can sit here with a refreshing drink and relax. There are excellent walks from the doorstep, some easy, but the majority are more demanding so this isn't a walking area for the faint hearted! The cottage is set between The Charles Bathurst Inn (2.5 miles), which has a fine reputation for good ale and excellent dining, and The Tan Hill Inn (5 miles). Known as the inn 'on top of the world' and standing at 1732ft above sea level, it's Britain's highest inn.
Five miles away is the popular village of Reeth, where Swaledale and Arkengarthdale meet. It is only 12 miles to the historic town of Barnard Castle in Teesdale, County Durham, which is home to the award-winning and iconic Bowes Museum. The market towns of Hawes, Leyburn and Richmond, Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force are also all nearby. For those wishing to get away from it all and enjoy peace and tranquillity, this one ticks all the boxes!

Two bedrooms: 1 x super king-size double, 1 x twin (zip/link, can be super king-size double on request). Eaves bathroom with freestanding bath, basin and WC. Kitchen with dining area and utility area. Sitting room with multi-fuel stove.
Leyburn 8 miles; Richmond 11 miles; Barnard Castle 15 miles; Kirkby Stephen 22 miles.
The pretty, ever-popular village of Reeth rests at the northern tip of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where Arkengarthdale and Swaledale meet, nestled between Calver Hill, Fremington Edge and Harkerside. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lovely rolling hills and spectacular views, Reeth boasts a colourful history as it was originally a Saxon settlement, and has also been known as a lead mining town and a centre for hand knitting throughout its time. Both trades are proudly featured in the Swaledale Museum, located alongside a good range of shops, tea rooms and restaurants. For a quaint little community, Reeth is well-served by traditional inns, with three to choose from, including the lovely Buck Hotel, whitewashed like so many of the 18th century cottages huddled around the triangular village green. The historic market towns of Richmond and Leyburn are also within easy reach, offering a further selection of amenities. Askrigg is just a short drive away, as well as Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force (England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft). Reeth offers a fantastic base for exploring North Yorkshire's beautiful, sweeping countryside, whether you choose to discover the caves, cliffs, waterfalls or the plethora of walking and cycling routes that circle this vibrant and varied landscape.
